The Church of the Messiah Rhinebeck – Jayne Brooks Food Pantry 2019 Year in Review

The Church of the Messiah extends a heartfelt note of thanks to our community and volunteers for your support and generous donations to our Food Pantry throughout the year and we wish you all a happy and healthy 2020!

2019 was another busy year during which 255 households were registered with us. We had over 1,700 visits from households representing 4,124 people. Over one-third of our clients are children and elderly. The holidays were once again a festive time at the Food Pantry and we saw a significant spike in visits during Thanksgiving when Gift Cards and festive food bags were added to our usual healthy and holiday food supplies. We have also continued to make children’s books available throughout the year.

During the year we ordered and distributed nearly 60,000 pounds of food from the regional Food Bank. Thanks to in-kind donations, the generosity of local farms, bakeries and supermarkets, and numerous successful food drives, we provided an estimated 20,000 to 25,000 pounds of additional food to our client community.

Thanks to the Dutchess Outreach and local donations, we gave away about 350 coats and jackets, plus sweaters and other “keep warm” winter accessories. About half of our giveaways were donated directly to us by the community.

One of our most significant achievements this year was the start-up of a satellite Food Pantry at the Violet Avenue Elementary School in Hyde Park, which serves the families of school students and staff. This new venture kicked off with great success in December. We anticipate an increase in Food Pantry participation during 2020 while we continue to sponsor the school’s backpack program, supplementing meals for school children who may not have enough to eat over weekends and holidays.

We encourage participation with a welcoming hospitality area where clients may enjoy a warm beverage and snack while their order is filled, and children may browse through a fun book. Thanks again to our dedicated volunteers and generous community who make this all possible and allow us to provide this valuable service to our community.
