Donald Anderson came to Marist College in 1970 to teach literature, writing, and theatre. He retired in 2012 and now holds the title Professor Emeritus of English. Currencies of August is the fulfillment of a promise made (to himself) at age seven: to publish a novel.
Set in the Hudson Valley, its narrator, Jeremiah Curtin, is a first-year college teacher who struggles with the paradoxes of his new profession while simultaneously trying to educate himself in the complexities of loving the woman who was his first-grade teacher 20 years earlier.
