Fisher Center at Bard College This Weekend Only: Bernstein’s “Candide”

TON associate conductor and academic director James Bagwell will lead two performances of Leonard Bernstein’s acclaimed operetta Candide, based on the immortal comic classic by Voltaire. The program will be sung by more than a dozen soloists from the Bard College Conservatory Graduate Vocal Arts Program, with the Bard College Symphonic Chorus and Bard College Chamber Singers.

No choreographer is more associated with SummerScape 2017’s central composer Fryderyk Chopin than Jerome Robbins, who set several major works to his music. The centerpiece of this program is Robbins’ Dances at a Gathering, accompanied by 18 of Chopin’s mazurkas, waltzes, and études. The piece premiered in 1969 and became an instant classic, hailed for its invention, virtuosity, and constantly shifting emotions.

French trumpetist and composer Yohan Giaume and New Orleans–based Evan Christopher lead a jazz nonet into a contemporary vision of the musical world of Louis Moreau Gottschalk, 19th-century New Orleans Creole composer and pianist.
