Paper Trail, Rhinebeck’s fine stationery and gift store, announces the publication of John Derian Picture Book with a personal appearance and book signing by John Derian on Saturday, October 8th from 3 to 5pm.   The handsome, oversized volume, long awaited by legions of John Derian fans, reproduces more than 400 of his iconic decoupaged plate images, and features a forward by Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

John Derian’s highly collectible plates and objects are decoupaged with 19th century artwork sourced from old and rare books, and handmade in his New York City studio.  The imagery is varied but hews to Derian’s aesthetic, comprising botanicals, curious portraits, hand-drawn letters and sweeping landscapes.  He single-handedly revived the craft of decoupage and elevated it to fine art.  His work is sold in his three eponymous Manhattan stores, as well as fine retailers worldwide, including Paper Trail.

Not many people, however, are aware that Paper Trail owners’ Serine Hastings and Maureen Missner played a key role in the start of Derian’s artistic career.  For over 20 years, Missner and Hastings owned The Loom Company, a New York City showroom for emerging designers and artisans.  They represented John Derian from his start in the 90’s until the early aughts.  A friendship grew from their business relationship, and they immediately gave prominent space to John Derian decoupage when they opened Paper Trail in Rhinebeck in 2005.  They have continued to feature his twice-yearly collections in their shop.

The event on October 8th will showcase a major installation of John Derian decoupage at Paper Trail, along with stacks of Picture Books, which he will personally sign.  “We are thrilled that John is making Paper Trail one of the first stops on his US book launch tour,” said Hastings.  “He has inspired us with his creations and delighted us with his friendship for almost three decades,” Missner continued.    “Picture Book is a work of art in and of itself, and is destined to become the gift book of the year.”
