WHO: John Folchi was born in the Bronx and studied at the Art Students League in Manhattan. He received his BA in 1977 and his MA in 1980, both from Lehman College where he studied with noted Greek artist Theo Stavropoulos. Folchi’s paintings have been shown continuously in solo and group exhibitions throughout New York State since the 1970s.
Most recently, his paintings have been included in shows at Briarcliff Gallery in Briarcliff Manor, Morris Gallery in the Lower East Side, the CCCP Gallery North Light, the Friday Studio Gallery, Loft 594 in Bushwick, Brooklyn, the e Gallery in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn and the Mark Gruber Gallery in New Paltz, as well as a solo show at the White Plains Public Library.
His work was shown at the Hoadley Gallery in Lenox, Mass and the Mary Childs Studio in Great Barrington. In 2013, there were two solo exhibitions comprised of his Hudson River Valley landscapes at the Warner Library in Tarrytown and the Gallery on Cedar in Dobbs Ferry. John’s work was also included in a two artist show at the Just Art Gallery in Providence, RI. In the summer of 2014, the Project Space of the Brian Morris Gallery presented a solo show titled “Reflections of Perceptions on the Periphery.”
In 2015, his work was the subject of the solo show “Abstract Utility” at the Kimmel Galleries in NYU on Washington Square, and was included in the invitational exhibition “Artists to Watch” at the Elder Gallery in Charlotte, NC. His work was exhibited with that of his late father, William P. Folchi, in the show “Bronx Views: Different Views” at the Gilbert Stuart Pavilion of the Defner Museum at the Hebrew Home for the Aged in Riverdale in 2015. The Elder Gallery in Charlotte NC presented a solo exhibit.
In addition to his many exhibitions Folchi’s paintings are included in collections held by: Pfizer, Fidelity Investments, UPS, Kramer, Levin, Nessen, Frankel Law Firm, NYC, Nan Ellen Rich, Richmond, Va., Geoffrey Young, Great Barrington, Va. and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Care Center.
He is represented by Kevin Barry Fine Art in Los Angeles and Las Vegas and Fresh Paint Art Advisors in Culver City, California.
WHAT: The exhibit “John Folchi-A Survey” encompasses works displaying Folchi’s style and growth as a painter. Included in the exhibit are a series of oil paintings depicting Hudson River Valley scenes. Using muted colors and hues these paintings exude a serene contemplative respect for our surroundings’ natural beauty pulling the viewer’s eye into the frame. Using light and shadows his realistic still-life paintings encourage the viewer to reach out to touch the object.
