In the spring of 1890, Calvert Vaux was hired by Robert Suckley to design the Wilderstein landscape. An important element of Vaux’s design was the potting shed and adjoining greenhouse manufactured by the Lord and Burnham Company. These structures were placed on the southern edge of the estate, where there had been extensive gardens for both flowers and vegetables.
The potting shed will be fully restored in 2016 thanks to a generous donation in memory of long-time Wilderstein supporters Martha and Frank Reardon. Completion of this project represents another important step forward in the ongoing preservation and development of Wilderstein Historic Site as a community resource and regional attraction.
