Tivoli, NY – The Tivoli Free Library invites beginning yoga students to join us for a series of beginning chair yoga classes. These classes will take place every Thursday evening at 6pm through July 21st. Each class costs $7 and attendees do not need to complete the entire series. You may register in advance by contacting the library, or on the night of the class in person.
Yoga is an activity that increases your flexibility, strengthens your muscles, centers your thoughts, and relaxes and calms you. People of all ages and abilities can partake in yoga – one adaptation is to use a chair. As the name implies, most movements in chair yoga will be done while seated in a chair, with options to stand and use the chair as a prop for balancing while in standing poses.

Chair yoga is designed not only for those dealing with physical limitations such as arthritis, joint pain, or weakness, but also a learning technique for people who spend many hours seated in an office. Chair yoga is a gentle way to stretch and tone muscles during the day and can also be used during long car trips, plane rides, etc.

This one-hour chair yoga class begins with a short centering practice (similar to meditation), followed by pranayama (yogic breathing), gentle stretches, and then movements to strengthen and tone muscles. We will wrap-up with seated savasana, or final relaxation.

The instructor, Marianne Neifeld, a certified 200-hour Kripalu yoga instructor, has been practicing meditation and yoga for 20 years. She has completed two intensive silent meditation retreats at Insight Meditation Society in Barre, MA, and has practiced meditation with Jose Reising.

The Tivoli Free Library is located in the historic Watts dePeyster Hall at 86  Broadway in the Village of Tivoli, NY.
