Kaatsbaan is pleased to welcome back Company XIV under the artistic direction of Austin McCormick on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 7:30 pm. COMPANY XIV continues to garner critical acclaim in New York and internationally for their unique fusion of passionate choreography, eclectic music, opera, circus, burlesque, ballet, gender bending, over the top costuming, and sumptuous design. Taking his cue from theatre/dance/opera under the reign of French monarch Louis XIV, Director/Choreographer Austin McCormick creates compelling 360-degree experiences for audiences fusing the antique with the contemporary.
The players of COMPANY XIV are classically trained theatrical libertines, who tempt, delight and fully immerse their audiences in the experience of their performances, inviting you to be seduced and enchanted! To quote the New York Times:
Sensuous…sumptuous…seductive. Mr. McCormick and his crew show great humor and a pronounced appreciation for body heat. The combination is deliriously rewarding.
Austin McCormick, who found the company in 2006, is a graduate of The Conservatory of Baroque Dance and holds a BFA from the Juilliard School. He has danced professionally for the Metropolitan Opera Ballet of New York. He was the winner of the 2011 Robert L.B. Tobin Director-Designer Grant from Opera America for new Directors in Opera. He has directed and/or choreographed opera projects for Gotham Chamber Opera at New York hotspots. The Box and Le Poisson Rouge. He choreographed a new production of La Traviata for Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera and Canadian Opera Company. In 2010, he was the winner of a New York Innovative Theatre Award for Best Choreography.
