Author/Musician Robert Burke Warren Reads and Performs Songs from Debut Novel, Perfectly Broken at Oblong in Rhinebeck – May 21
RHINEBECK, NY—Oblong Books & Music in Rhinebeck is excited to present Robert Burke Warren on Saturday, May 21, at 6:00 p.m., Warren’s skills as actor, musician, and writer will come into play at once. He’ll read from Perfectly Broken – one retailer summed up it up as “a sex, dads, and rock & roll novel” – and perform songs from the story, which includes musicians from fictional 90s bands. A Q&A and book signing will follow.
“All I’ve done has been preparation for Perfectly Broken,” says Robert Burke Warren of his debut novel, out now from The Story Plant. And by “all,” he means: touring the world with 80s garage rockers the Fleshtones, writing songs for both multi-Grammy winner Rosanne Cash and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, playing the lead in the West End jukebox musical Buddy: the Buddy Holly Story, touring and recording as children’s musician Uncle Rock, writing acclaimed essays and arts pieces for multiple outlets, and, more than anything, surviving ‘til middle age.
“I’ve always written,” Warren says, “but about ten years ago, I devoted myself to it.” He began working for the Woodstock Times and Chronogram, branching out to national outlets like Texas Monthly, Paste, and Salon, among others. “The book was inevitable…” he says.
Since its release in March 2016, Perfectly Broken has garnered raves. Rosanne Cash, a New York Times bestselling author herself, calls it “a stunning debut”; Beverly Donofrio, Woodstock’s own NYT bestselling author of Riding in Cars with Boys, says, “It pulled me in and I didn’t want to let go.”
