RHINEBECK, NY—Oblong Books is excited to bring Hudson Valley author and illustrator G. Brian Karas to the Rhinebeck Farmers Market on Sunday, May 15 from 11am – 1pm. Brian’s books are always informative and fun for children and his latest book is no exception.

“On The Farm, At The Market” introduces children to both local and urban green markets and paints a warm picture of a strong, interconnected community – what better place to showcase it than at our own wonderful Rhinebeck Farmers Market!

Karas divides his entertaining and enlightening behind-the-scenes story of a farmers’ market into two sections. The first, “On the Farm,” illustrates the daily grind that keeps farms running and provides a glimpse into how a farm really works, including loading up the produce in the evening after a long, hard day, ready for the early morning trip to market. The second section, “At the Market,” brings the farmers together early the next morning, setting up their stands and preparing for shoppers to arrive. Chef Amy, the baker at the Busy Bee Cafe, thoughtfully selects produce and visits with each vendor, then everyone celebrates the end of market day with a community farm-to-table meal she creates.

Karas’ gouache, acrylic, and pencil illustrations are rich and realistic, and the story serves to raise a child’s awareness of the earth, where their food comes from, and who in their community is involved.

G. Brian Karas has illustrated many books for children, including Muncha! Muncha! Muncha! And Tippy-Tippy-Tippy, Hide! by Candace Fleming; Incredible Me by Kathi Appelt; the High-Rise Private Eyes series by Cynthia Rylant; and Ivan by Catherine Applegate, which was a New York Times “bestseller. He has written and illustrated  many of which have been named ALA Notables, Booklist Editor Choices, School Library Journal Best Books, and Boston Globe Horn Book Honor books.
