Upcoming Events at the Rhinebeck Historical Society
Sunday, January 31 @ 3pm at Northern Dutchess Hospital, Rhinebeck, NY
‘Public Health Care Comes to Red Hook and Rhinebeck’. Join Dr. Sandra Lewenson, Professor of Nursing at Pace University, as she recounts the earliest days of rural health care in Dutchess County. One of the country’s few nursing historians, Dr. Lewenson also will describe the establishment of the Thompson House and an innovative American Red Cross rural public health nursing program designed to bring health care to rural towns such as Red Hook. She raises questions about health care today in the community and how the past can inform our decisions. The program is jointly sponsored by the Rhinebeck Historical Society, Historic Red Hook and Northern Dutchess Hospital. Refreshments to be served courtesy of NDH.
Friday, February 26 @ 7:30pm at the Starr Library
Tony Musso will lecture on his new book “Hidden Treasures of the Catskills”. Tony is an author and reporter for the Poughkeepsie Journal. Tony has lectured many times at our programs and always has great stories to tell about the history of the Hudson Valley. Refreshments will be served.
Friday March 18 @ 7:30pm at the Starr Library
Clay Hammond, Chief Pilot at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, will lecture on ‘The History of the Aerodrome’. Clay took his first airplane ride on his mother’s lap at age 5 months and it has been in his blood ever since. Clay has flown many types of planes and has over 20 trans-continental adventures under his belt. This program promises to be a truly great event. Refreshments will be served.
Saturday, May 7 at the Arts and Crafts Building in the Dutchess County Fairgrounds
‘Racing through history’ – Stock Car Racing at the Rhinebeck Speedway in the Dutchess County Fairgrounds. A joint program between the RHS and Historic Red Hook (HRH). The details are still being worked out but the program take place during the May car show. We are locating some of the original drivers and hopefully a few of their cars. We hope to have a slide show, scrap books and a discussion about racing at the Rhinebeck speedway which took place from 1947 to 1962. Save the date and stay tuned for details in the Summer newsletter which will be out at the end of April.
