Cardiologist Dr. Benjamin Schaefer joins The Heart Center
Rhinebeck, N.Y. – Coming from a German family with three generations of doctors, Dr. Benjamin Schaefer is continuing the tradition of helping people through medicine in the mid-Hudson Valley as a cardiologist at The Heart Center.
Board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease, he sees patients in the practice’s Rhinebeck office and is on the medical staff at Northern Dutchess Hospital. His specialty interests include preventive cardiology, cardiovascular imaging, heart failure and pulmonary hypertension.
“My mother said when I was 9 years old, I wanted to be a doctor,” Schaefer said. “I like taking care of very sick patients. That’s where you can make the most difference.”
About two years ago, a move from Maine to the Town of Rhinebeck to be closer to his wife’s family in Columbia County brought him to Albany Associates in Cardiology with privileges at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany.
From 2006 to 2013, he worked at Northeast Cardiology Associates in Bangor, Maine and held leadership roles, including cardiology chief and cardiac rehabilitation director at St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor.
He received his doctorate in medicine in 1998 from the Free University of Berlin. He continued his education with an internal medicine residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx and a cardiology fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle.
A husband to an emergency physician and father to a 3-year-old boy, his interests include cooking, biking and photography.
