RHINEBECK—Hudson Valley resident, literary agent and author Bill Clegg is among the U.S. writers longlisted for this year’s Man Booker Prize. This is the second year that the prize has been open to authors of any nationality who have an English-language book published in the U.K. Previously the prize, which comes with £50,000, was awarded to authors from the U.K. and Commonwealth, Republic of Ireland, and Zimbabwe.

Clegg, who has been nominated for his debut novel Did You ever Have a Family? is joined on the list by two other debut novelists. Chigozie Obioma and Anna Smaill.

The shortlist of six books will be announced on September 15, and the winner will be revealed on October 13 at an event broadcast by the BBC.

“The force, range, and scope of Bill Clegg’s Did You Ever Have a Family will grab you with its opening lines, and won’t let go until its final one. I can’t recall another novel that so effortlessly weds a nuanced, lyrical voice to an unflinching vision of just how badly things can go for people. I read it deep into the night, all the way through, telling myself it was getting late, I could finish the book in the morning. I finished it that night, however, slept a few hours, and then, in the morning, started reading it again.” —Michael Cunningham, author of THE HOURS

Clegg will appear at Oblong Books & Music in Rhinebeck on Saturday, September 12 at 7pm.
