Lokasparsa Dance Company invites you be part of “Underbelly” – Tuesday, July 28th, 2015
This Tuesday, July 28, offers a rare opportunity to take part in the birth of a professional, contemporary dance piece.
Lokasparsa Dance Company invites you be part of “Underbelly” — an Open Rehearsal Event for its newest piece: “Gibbous.” For anyone interested in the creative process, this is a rare, behind-the-scenes chance to become an active witness to the physical work, problem-solving, improvisation, emotion, and sweat equity that goes into the making of contemporary dance.
What is Lokasparsa Dance Company? Loosely translated, the word “lokasparsa” (pronounced low-kah-shpar-sah) means “connection with all worlds.” Our mission–to dismantle barriers through performance and movement education–is realized through classes and performances, with plans to expand to events geared toward isolated populations, and the creation of a beautiful new permanent dance and performance space in the Hudson Valley. Lokasparsa’s classes and productions are designed to touch deeply on what connects individuals, and what challenges that connection.
Our inaugural piece, titled “Gibbous,” will premier September 13 at Zen Mountain Monastery. With moments of astounding beauty, sound, stillness and explosive movement, Gibbous travels among the five company dancers to extremes of intimacy, solitude, isolation, and invisibility. Along the way, we navigate with the audience the tension between attraction and compulsion, and the strength of our desire to see and be seen.
The door (and donation jar, for those who can help support this process) will be open for “Underbelly” (the open rehearsal event) from 7-9pm on Tuesday, July 28, at the delightfully air conditioned Kleinert/James Center for the Arts in downtown Woodstock, with free parking nearby. Light refreshments, cocktails, and non-alcoholic beverages will be served, and audience members will have a chance to witness this process, ask questions, and provide invaluable feedback to the dancers and choreographer. We hope you can join us for this intimate and thoroughly unique creative event.
If you can’t make it to Underbelly, we hope you’ll be able to join us for the premier of Gibbous at the Sangha House Performance Hall at Zen Mountain Monastery in Mount Tremper at 7pm on September 13. And please consider making an online donation of any amount you can–every little bit is so very much appreciated–at lokasparsadance.org, to help fund future performances, classes and workshops; therapeutic outreach to isolated communities; and the creation of an exciting new contemporary dance space in the Hudson Valley.
