Excitement is in the air as BalletNext returns to Kaatsbaan on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 7:30 pm with two new choreographic premiers.
BalletNext, under the artistic direction of Michele Wiles (former Principal Dancer with American Ballet Theatre from 2005-2011), has been in residence at Kaatsbaan for three weeks working on their newest program.
Anticipation surrounds a collaboration with Michele Wiles, Canadian electro-acoustic cellist/composer Chris Lancaster and “Flex is Kings” dancer, Jay Donn. Mr. Lancaster, trained as a classical cellist, has travelled new roads as he explores the many facets and possibilities of the instrument. He has composed over 50 full-length works for concert, Dance, Film and Theater. Jay Donn, well known for his performance in the 2014 film, “Flex is Kings”, is a highly energetic, daredevil dancer from Brooklyn, New York. He is a founder of the Brooklyn dance style known as Flexing and creator of the sub-style, “Punchlines.” He has toured both nationally and internationally and regularly performs with Mr. Lancaster.
Also receiving a premier performance on the evening’s program will be a new ensemble work by Canadian choreographer, Peter Quantz, who has choreographed for dance companies, opera and theatre, and has created ballets for some of the world’s leading ballet companies. From the age of nine Mr. Quantz knew that choreography was his calling. By clearly defining his need to choreograph at a young age, Peter chose to pursue his creative development and education rather than follow a dancer’s traditional career. He performed with the Stuttgart Ballet and has been a free-lance choreographer since 2002.
Now in its fourth year BALLETNEXT continues to receive accolades from the dance world for its exquisite dance and creative choreography. In talking about the company and the world of ballet Ms. Wiles said “There is a change happening in the dance world that we haven’t experienced in a long time. It’s like we’re all being awakened to something else.” That something else has resulted in a brilliant partnership of dancers, choreographers and musicians.
Michele Wiles founded BALLETNEXT in 2011 and is its Artistic Director. As an international ballerina, Ms. Wiles has performed the classical ballet repertory throughout the world. She has graced the Kaatsbaan stage in several of its Galas and will once again perform at Kaatsbaan’s November 15, 2015 Starburst of Dance Gala.
Kaatsbaan is a nonprofit, professional creative residence and performance facility situated on a 153-acre historic site in Tivoli, NY.
