HEALTH QUEST AND WALKWAY OVER THE HUDSON PARTNER TO INTRODUCE THE WALKWAY FITNESS CHALLENGE

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – Health Quest and Walkway Over the Hudson will launch a six-week program designed to promote health and wellness for the entire community. Open to the public, the Walkway Fitness Challenge calls for enrollees to walk, bike, or run on the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park for 30 minutes on twelve different occasions from Friday, May 2, through Saturday, June 14, 2014.

“This is a winning combination,” said Ellen Henneberry, development manager for Walkway Over the Hudson. “Walkway provides a safe, friendly and scenic environment for participants to reach their fitness goals. This is an important alliance between Health Quest and Walkway to promote health and wellness throughout the community.”

“We encourage people to be active for optimal health,” said Dr. Daniel O’Dea, president of The Heart Center, a Health Quest affiliate. “The mission of the Challenge is to encourage healthy lifestyle activities in the communities we serve. Prevention of disease and improving the health of our communities is at the core of everything we do.”

Health Quest and Walkway Over the Hudson also collaborated to build an activity log component into Health Quest’s free smartphone app, “Health Quest U.” The activity log button allows participants to enter the contest with their log details and activity, making them eligible for prizes such as a one-year membership to Walkway Over the Hudson, a massage from Women’s View at Northern Dutchess Hospital, clothing gear, and two gift certificates to Mike Arteaga’s Health and Fitness Center.

In addition to the use of the Health Quest U activity log, participants will also be eligible to win prizes when “selfies” are posted from the midway point of the Walkway on Instagram or Twitter to @My_HealthQuest with hashtag #HQHealthySelfie, or by printing the registration form from health-quest.org/walkway. The winners will be announced at the Treetops to Rooftops 5K Race awards ceremony on June 14.

Another component of the Walkway Fitness Challenge is a schedule of “Walk and Talks” on a variety of health topics onsite at the Walkway Over the Hudson. On May 17, at 3 p.m., Dr. O’Dea will speak about “Nutrition and Physical Activity.” On June 6, at noon, Dr. Anthony D’Ambrosio of Health Quest Medical Practice will speak on General Wellness Tips. The sessions will begin at the top of the Washington Street Stairs (East Gate) in Poughkeepsie and no registration is required.
