The roots of Austro-German Romanticism will be explored at the 2014 annual Bard SummerScape festival, which once again offers a sensational summer of music, opera, theater, dance, film, and cabaret, keyed to the theme of the 25th anniversary season of the world-renowned Bard Music Festival: Schubert and His World.

Euryanthe by Carl Maria von Weber

Sosnoff Theater

Based on a medieval romance and filled with gloriously beautiful music, Euryanthe depicts a story of chivalry, betrayal, innocence, and love, with a touch of the supernatural. Kevin Newbury, whose acclaimed production of Richard Strauss’s Die Liebe der Danae was a highlight of SummerScape 2011, will direct.

The Bard Music Festival will celebrate its 25th anniversary with an exploration of the world of Franz Schubert (1797–1828), one of the preeminent composers in the Western tradition and yet a figure who in many ways remains elusive.

Trisha Brown Dance Company

Sosnoff Theater

The legendary Trisha Brown Dance Company returns to SummerScape as part of its farewell tour, presenting some of the last performances of Brown’s largest-scale works. This program includes her final dance as well as revivals of her collaborations with Laurie Anderson and Robert Rauschenberg.

Love in the Wars (world premiere)

Theater Two

Heinrich von Kleist’s romantic drama, based on the mythical encounter of Achilles with the Queen of the Amazons, is given new life in this funny, explosive, and surprising adaptation by Man Booker Prize–winning novelist John Banville. This world premiere presentation will be directed by two-time Obie Award winner Ken Rus Schmoll.

Film Series

Schubert and the Long 19th Century

July 3 – August 3

Jim Ottaway Jr. Film Center

The 2014 SummerScape Film Series will explore the many ways in which Schubert’s music and early Romanticism have influenced international cinema. To commemorate the centenary of the July Crisis in 1914, it will include films reflecting on the origins and repercussions of the First World War.
