Red Hook to Host Sculpture Expo 13

Red Hook to Host Sculpture Expo 13

First-ever showcase of large outdoor works opens June 15
Red Hook, NY – Sculpture Expo 13 (SE13), an ambitious series of eight large, mixed-media sculptures by noted regional and international artists opening on June 15, promises to transform Red Hook’s normally quiet streetscape into an arresting palette of color, shape and form.

The show will stretch from the Red Hook Emporium, at the southern gateway of the Village of Red Hook, to the Red Hook Memorial Park, in the north. It is being organized by the Red Hook Community Arts Network (RHCAN), with major support from Ulster Savings Bank, and runs until November 20.
“SE13 is a celebration of art and community in Red Hook,

” notes its curator, Rita Gentile.

“There is certain to be something of interest for everyone.”

For example, who will fail to notice Ursula Clark’s monumental, eight-foot tall “Bird Goddess,” made of chicken wire, vines, birch sticks and pods? Or one of David Borenstein’s welded steel sculptures?
Joining the Brooklyn-based Clark, and Borenstein, are Conrad Levenson and Ze’ev Willy Neumann. Levenson, who has a passion for using old objects in new ways, will exhibit “Screw Totem” and “Dynamic Angles.”
The self-taught, Israeli born Neumann, who owns Double Take Gallery and studio, in Saugerties, will display pieces that reflect his personal journey of “intensity, fury, contemplation and mirth.”
To help celebrate the outdoor show, RHCAN also will present “Exploring the Third Dimension,” an exhibit of 3-D media art, including sculpture and wall pieces such as Cornell boxes, fiber art, masks and bas-reliefs. This show will be at the RHCAN/Artists Collective gallery, 7516 N. Broadway, from June 14 through July 21.

An Artists Reception celebrating both exhibits is to take place at the Elmendorph Inn, 7562 N. Broadway, on Saturday, June 15, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  To learn more about SE13, Exploring the Third Dimension, and/or RHCAN, please visit or contact
