“Operation Hang Up” underway during Thanksgiving holiday

New York State News :

ALBANY – State Police are conducting their Operation Hang Up traffic enforcement campaign during the Thanksgiving weekend. The effort is targeted at motorists who use their cell phones and other electronic devices while driving.

Research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety indicates that drivers who use hand held devices are four times more likely to be involved in accidents that are serious enough to cause injuries. At average highway speeds, in three seconds, a motorist will travel the length of a football field.

Traffic volumes are heaviest during Thanksgiving and that increases the risk of highway crashes for everyone.

Every available state trooper will be on patrol during the holiday watching for people using cell phones or other electronic devices. Speeders, impaired drivers, and those not properly buckled up will also be cited.
