Rhinebeck, NY… Preparation for the Dutchess County Fair can be daunting. But, along with all of the hundreds of details involving animals, exhibits, volunteers, staffing, rides and entertainment, Deborah Aschmann, Manager Administrative Operations & Concessions has included organizing a food drive for the 2012 fair (August 21-26).  “There are a huge number of people in the Hudson Valley dependent on food banks for their meals and we never want to lose sight of giving back and helping our neighbors in need,” said Aschmann.
Non-perishable food will be collected at the Main Gate and the 4-H Hill Gate from 10am-10pm each day of the six-day event. Fairgoers are encouraged to bring general food and household items such as: soap, shampoos, pet food, toothpaste, pancake mix, white or brown rice, sugar, flour, cooking oil and family treats like pudding, jello, muffin or cake mixes.

Beneficiaries of the collections have a long history of helping those in need. The Church of the Messiah Food Bank serves over 180 households with over 300 adults and more than 125 children right in Rhinebeck.
The Rhinebeck Reformed Church helps 212 adults and 74 children and these numbers do not reflect the pre-packed emergency food bags that are distributed each week.
Reach Out Church Food Pantry statistics include a total of 275 families per month with 800 individuals and a staggering 9,500 lbs of food distributed. The Red Hook Methodist Church is included in the recipients of the DCF food drive and their pantry is open on Friday with a Saturday pick-up day. County wide, the Dutchess County Community Action Partnership makes a tremendous impact with an outreach of 2895 unduplicated households representing 5,960 individuals.
“This is always a good time to help and while your family is getting ready for a fun day at the Dutchess County Fair, take an extra minute to pack up some food items and remember those people who depend on food banks to keep their families fed,” said Aschmann.
