About nineteen years ago, almost to the day, we packed the family minivan with all of my so-called “essentials” (you know, Ramen Noodles in bulk, prepaid phone cards, pretty pink stationary to keep in touch with friends back home, etc) and set out on the 8-hour trek down to St. Mary’s College of Maryland. For me, there was utter excitement in the possibilities that lay ahead – I was officially a “College Frosh” as they say, and felt ready to embrace my newfound independence. Naturally, these emotions were countered by the sadness of leaving home – family, friends and everything familiar in small-town Rhinebeck – but I knew that it was time for me to take everything I had learned and move into the next chapter of my life.
