“New Paltz is a wonderful place, a very open, diverse community, which is why transients like to come here during the summer months,” New Paltz police chief Joe Snyder said. “It’s not one particular group. It’s a mix. You have the transients that are voluntarily homeless and move from place to place, you have New Paltz kids that choose to hang-out downtown at all hours, you do have people with alcohol or drug problems, and you have people who are truly homeless. When we offer them a place to stay or send them to Family, they’re grateful. Most of them don’t want to find a home.”
