Village of Rhinebeck wants better sidewalks

RHINEBECK — The Village Board is taking steps to improve conditions noted in a recent study that found 46 percent of sidewalks to be deficient or damaged.

Board member Terry Gipson said during a telephone interview that members of a working group will be ready by the June 6 Village Board meeting with revisions to a local law that would impose additional liability on property owners.

  1. I spent a few hours walking around Boston, including Boston Commons, a few weeks ago and was very impressed with their brick sidewalks. I think this would be a good solution for Rhinebeck because they can be used to create a smooth surface, even when the elevations change. They offer flexibility so that when one is damaged it can be replaced without replacing a large area. They have a historic feeling to them, are warm and inviting. I think the installation of brick sidewalks could be phased in gradually, and the cost should be much less than large concrete projects.
