Text message helps pair alert rescuers after canoe overturns in Tivoli Bays

TIVOLI — A grandfather and grandson from Dutchess County were rescued Wednesday evening from Tivoli Bays in the Hudson River after their canoe overturned while they were hunting, according to Dutchess County sheriff’s deputies.

Deputies said Christopher Hoffman, 73, of Hopewell Junction, and Thomas Mulvaney, 17, of Rhinebeck, were rescued after an undetermined period in the water because Mulvaney was able to text message family and friends and alert them to their plight.
