Groups team up, will undertake home fixes

The Rhinebeck Rotary and Rebuilding Together Dutchess County are collaborating on a new pilot program to assist Rhinebeck residents 60 and over. The Senior Home Assistance Program will address minor home repair concerns of the elderly who do not have the resources or are physically incapable of providing safe conditions in their homes. It is hoped this initiative will contribute to their ability to age at home in a manner that is as safe and independent as possible. The Rotary members have organized themselves into six teams of three or more members to respond to the requests made by the homeowners. The calls for assistance are to be made directly to Rebuilding Together Dutchess County at 845-454-7310. These services must be nonemergency in nature. They will be provided on the second weekend of each month. Services may consist of installing grab bars in showers, assistance at reaching difficult bulb replacements, installation of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, assistance with minor outdoor maintenance, gutter cleaning, repairing locks and other minor handyman type problems. There is also an intergenerational component to the program. Assisting the Rotary club will be members of the Rhinebeck Rotary Interact Club who are juniors and seniors at Rhinebeck High School.
