RHINEBECK – Vincent Nasta, known as Vinny to his friends and co-workers, died doing what he loved -flying.

 Pilot in fatal crash identified

RHINEBECK — The pilot killed in a plane crash Sunday has been identified as Vincent Nasta, a teacher at Riverhead High School on Long Island.

Nasta “had experience flying both restored originals and replica Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome airplanes like the Nieuport,” Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome Air Shows President Hugh Schoelzel said in the release. “He was a great pilot who flew in air shows throughout the region and he was a certified commercial flight instructor in addition to his work with Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. The loss of this fine man is devastating for his family and to his extended family at the Aerodrome.”

Roger Christenfeld, City of Poughkeepsie Democratic chairman, was attending the air show this afternoon with family.

He said during the finale of the air show, two of the aerodrome’s vintage airplanes were simulating a dogfight between a German plane and a French plane when one of the planes apparently lost control and crashed.”It was surreal,” Christenfeld said. “One minute it was pretend danger, then it went suddenly to real danger.”
