Fire company volunteer wins $500 scholarship

Gregory Salat is the winner of the Rhinecliff Volunteer Fire Co. and Rescue Squad annual scholarship.

The scholarship was recently renamed to honor Brian Butler, a member of the Rhinecliff company who died this year.

Salat, who graduated from Rhinebeck High School in June, was a member of the school’s soccer, baseball and track teams until his senior year, when he took up a job.

He plans to continue working while attending Dutchess Community College beginning in the fall. He will also remain a member of the fire company.

“We are very pleased to award this scholarship to Greg. He works hard, tries hard and studies hard. Our brother, Brian Butler, had the same qualities, and I am sure he is smiling at our choice,” said Cynthia Baer, president of the fire company.

The $500 scholarship is awarded, in part, as an incentive for students 16 and older to join the fire company or rescue squad.

To obtain an application for the Junior Rhinecliff Volunteer Fire Program or for general membership, contact Tim Conklin at 845-707-0111 or Baer at 845-876-5738.
