Every fall and spring, thousands of Christians in about 2,000 communities walk to help victims of weather disasters, epidemics or poverty. (CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty.) Last year, participants who were sponsored by churches, individuals, service clubs, etc. raised almost $92 million. As a result, workers went to 80 countries to provide shelter, food, care and support to many people. CROP Walks are sponsored by Church World Service, an organization founded in 1946 by 35 Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican denominations. At the time, many desperate people were suffering due to World War II and the subsequent Cold War. Many were refugees — homeless and trapped by poverty
