Tree Setup
1. If you don’t put up the tree right away, wrap the stump in a damp towel and leave it in a cool, but not freezing, place.2. Before you bring in the tree, make a fresh cut on the bottom of the trunk to remove any dried sap. Get it into a stand right away, and water.5. While the tree is displayed, hide the tree bag with a tree skirt.

Once you’ve chosen the perfect Christmas tree and brought it home, the next step is getting it to its designated spot in the house. A few preparatory measures can make this sometimes daunting job easier: To keep needles from dropping everywhere, wrap the tree in an old sheet as you carry it through the house; and avoid placing the tree near a source of heat or ventilation (which causes the needles to fall off and poses a fire hazard).

3. A stand with four spouts is ideal because the stand can adjust to fit any tree

4. Using a plastic tree bag will make cleanup easier: Just pull the bag up over the tree to carry it outside after the holidays.

6. The tree and stand can be placed in a metal basin or a terra-cotta pot — just make sure the resulting setup isn’t top-heavy. Freshly cut trees absorb as much as a gallon of water a day. Check the stand daily, and make sure the bottom of the trunk is always immersed. Before decorating the tree, place a sheet on the floor to catch needles. Put up lights and garlands first, ornaments last. THANK YOU MARTHA!

A Queen Anne mansion soaring above the Hudson River, Wilderstein stands out for its combination of natural beauty and Victorian architecture.

Each year, florists and designers transform the Wilderstein mansion into a holiday spectacular.

Wilderstein’s yuletide celebration kicks off Thanksgiving weekend and continues through the end of December. Wilderstein’s interior will feature mantels, doors and stairways festooned in a mix of period and modern decorations.

Chef and author Laura Pensiero will be at Wilderstein during tour hours Dec. 5 beginning at 2:30 p.m. Owner of the restaurant Gigi Trattoria in Rhinebeck, Pensiero will share samplings of her cuisine and sign copies of her new book, “Hudson Valley Mediterranean.” The cookbook showcases her interpretations of traditional Italian dishes created from the bounty of the Hudson Valley.

Wilderstein’s annual Yuletide Tea is at 1 p.m. Dec. 12. Guests can enjoy a festive afternoon featuring fine tea, homemade cakes, cookies and finger sandwiches. Visitors are asked to make reservations as seating is limited.

The mansion is open for holiday tours from 1-4 p.m. Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 27, 28 and 29) and all weekends in December.

The regular deer hunting season begins at sunrise Saturday in the state’s Southern Zone and regular bear hunting season also starts in the southeastern portion of the Southern Bear Range and the emphasis, as it is every year, is on safety.

The bear season in the central-western portion of the Southern Bear Range begins Nov. 28.

These big-game hunting seasons close at sunset on Dec. 13.

Some Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) boundaries have changed. It is important that hunters review the new WMU boundaries since Deer Management Permits (DMPs or doe tags) are only valid in the unit for which they were issued. Boundary changes also affect some season dates and bag limits and open areas for other game spieces. Check www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8302.html for boundary descriptions and revisions.

DMPs can be transferred from one hunter to another, but a new regulation prohibits the buying and selling of tags between hunters. See www.dec.ny.gov/regulations/56325.html
